Safety-certified draw wire sensors: Gefran introduces the SIL2 / PLd versions of the GSH series

Expanding its portfolio with new SIL2/PLd certified sensors, Gefran strengthens its position as a reference partner for safety-certified sensing solutions in mobile machines

Enhancing functional safety in mobile machines

In the mobile machines sector, functional safety plays a key role in ensuring both operator protection and reliable machine operation, especially in demanding environments characterized by shocks, vibrations and harsh working conditions.

Within this context, Gefran expands its portfolio of sensing solutions by introducing SIL2 / PLd-certified versions of its GSH draw wire sensors, designed to meet the latest safety requirements and support the development of compliant machine architectures.

This evolution reflects Gefran’s ongoing commitment to delivering robust, reliable and safety-oriented sensing technologies for the mobile machines market.

A complete safety-certified GSH portfolio

The SIL2 / PLd certification now covers the entire GSH draw wire sensor family, including both GSH-S (linear position measurement) and GSH-A (linear and angular position measurement), for all stroke lengths: 1,800 to 8,300 mm and 10,000 to 12,500 mm, ensuring full coverage for a wide range of mobile machine applications.

The range includes analogue output versions compliant with SIL2 / PLd requirements, as well as digital solutions based on CANopen and CANopen Safety protocols, both certified up to SIL2 / PLd. The introduction of the CANopen Safety version represents a key step forward, enabling safe communication over the bus and supporting the integration of sensors into functional safety architectures.

This comprehensive offering allows OEMs to select the most suitable configuration in terms of measured variables, output type, performance and safety level, simplifying system design while ensuring compliance with international safety standards.

Safety requirements driven by real machine applications

In mobile machines such as telehandlers, aerial work platforms and construction equipment, accurate monitoring of boom extension, lifting systems and machine stability is essential to ensure safe operation, especially when working at height or under dynamic load conditions. In these applications, sensors are directly involved in safety-related control functions, where any incorrect or inconsistent measurement can lead to hazardous situations for both operators and equipment.

For this reason, the market increasingly requires safety-certified sensing solutions capable of meeting the standards defined by functional safety regulations, supporting the design of systems that can detect faults, manage failures and transition to a safe state when needed.

By providing SIL2 / PLd-certified draw wire sensors, Gefran enables OEMs to address these requirements with components specifically designed for safety-critical applications, reducing complexity in system validation and contributing to the development of safer and more reliable machines.

Driving the future of safety-certified sensing solutions

With the introduction of SIL2 / PLd-certified GSH draw wire sensors, Gefran continues to strengthen its position as a trusted partner in the mobile machines sector, supporting OEMs in the development of safe, compliant and high-performance machines.

Alongside the already available SIL2 / PLd-certified KM and KMC pressure sensors, this milestone represents a further step in a broader roadmap aimed at extending functional safety certification across the entire mobile sensor portfolio, including rotary sensors and inclinometers.
